Great career opportunities in a dynamic sector

The UK logistics sector is massively important to the UK worth over £93bn to our economy. With the growth of on-line shopping the sector is set to continue expanding even further and overtake the retail sector in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The sector employs 2.2 million people spanning some 196,000 companies.

Logistics is all about the movement and storage of goods and people. The sector is increasingly becoming more highly technical and fast moving as we the public demand a wider variety and more sophisticated product range, faster delivery times and better customer service.

Over the years logistics has traditionally suffered from the negative perception that it is not a good place for a person to forge a successful career, offering only low skilled, low paid warehousing jobs. Logistics however is operating on a global scale and offers a multitude of employment opportunities. There are currently 2.2m people employed in logistics in this country, that is one in 12 of UK workers, yet we face a great difficulty in attracting young people in to the industry. Of the current workforce just 9% are under 25 and 45% are over 45.

The National Logistics Academy is responding to these employment and skills shortages by delivering a Pathway to Apprenticeship route in order to promote attract, train, and progress young people into pursuing a career in logistics.

It is projected that 658,000 additional workers will be required over the next 5 years in the sector. We already have well known, local large employers such as Wincanton, DX Delivered Exactly, TTX express, Bidvest, Kitbag, and Yearsley Logistics supporting this initiative offering work experience, placements, apprenticeships, jobs, and careers.

A young person joining The National Logistics Academy will get our guarantee of receiving the training and support needed to succeed in the industry, to gain employment, qualifications, and progression opportunities. Additional to this, young people will become members of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport when they enrol on to an apprenticeship with The Academy.

Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining nationally-recognised qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

Employers all over the country recognise and value Apprenticeships as they show that they've been trained in the skills they need.

Apprenticeships typically take between one and two years to complete, depending on the type of framework.

Earn while you learn

Apprentices do real jobs for real employers so they are paid while they learn, for more information on current pay rates please visit the following website -
